About Salik: Dubai's Electronic Toll System

Salik, which means "clear" or "smooth" in Arabic, is Dubai's free-flowing road toll system. There are no barriers or booths. Instead, a small sticker tag on your windscreen is read by overhead gates as you drive underneath at normal speed, and the toll is deducted from your prepaid Salik account automatically.

Toll gates are placed on the city's busiest routes, including several points along Sheikh Zayed Road (such as Al Barsha, Al Safa and Jebel Ali), Al Garhoud Bridge, Al Maktoum Bridge, Al Mamzar on Al Ittihad Road, Airport Tunnel and the newer gates at Business Bay Crossing and Al Safa South. The network grows from time to time, so it is worth checking the current list before planning a regular commute.

  • A standard toll is charged each time you pass a gate; peak-hour and off-peak pricing has applied since 2025, so the exact charge depends on the time of day.
  • Some gate pairs are counted as a single trip if you pass both within a set time window in the same direction.
  • If your balance is too low when you pass a gate, the trip is recorded and a fine can follow if the account is not topped up within the grace period.

Because every crossing draws from your prepaid balance, a regular Salik recharge is the simplest way to avoid violations. Always confirm current toll rates on the official Salik channels, as prices and rules can change.

Ways to Do a Salik Recharge

There is more than one way to complete a Salik recharge top up. Pick the method that matches how quickly you need the balance and how you prefer to pay.

Comparison of Salik recharge methods by minimum amount and speed

Step-by-Step Salik Top Up

Whichever channel you choose, a Salik top up follows the same three simple steps.

Find your Salik tag or plate number

Your 10-digit Salik tag number is printed on the sticker on the inside of your windscreen and on the original Salik pack. If you cannot find it, you can usually identify the account using your vehicle plate details: the emirate, the plate category or code and the plate number.

Choose your Salik recharge amount

Select a fixed amount such as AED 50, 100, 200 or 500, or enter your own figure. Think about how many gates you pass each week: a daily commuter through two gates can easily use more than AED 100 a month, so a larger top up saves time.

Pay and confirm the new balance

Complete the payment through the official channel you chose, then keep the confirmation SMS or email. Check that the new balance appears on your Salik account; if it does not show within a few hours, contact the official Salik customer service with your receipt.

Salik Recharge Tips for Drivers

A few habits make Salik painless and help you avoid unexpected fines.

  • Tip 1

    Turn on low-balance alerts

Register your mobile number on your Salik account so you receive an SMS when the balance falls below the alert level.

  • Tip 2

    Top up before long trips

Heading from Jebel Ali to Deira or to the airport? Check your balance first, because one trip can cross several gates.

  • Tip 3

    Keep the tag in place

Do not move or cover the windscreen sticker. A damaged or relocated tag may not be read correctly by the gates.

  • Tip 4

    Use official channels only

Pay through the official Salik website, app or authorised partners, and never share card details through links in unsolicited messages.

  • Tip 5

Update details when you sell a car

When you sell or transfer a vehicle, make sure the Salik account and any remaining balance are handled so you are not charged for someone else's trips.

Salik Recharge Top Up FAQ

What is the minimum Salik recharge amount?

Most channels accept a Salik recharge from AED 50. Recharge cards are also commonly sold in AED 50 denominations, with larger amounts available online and through the app.

How long does a Salik top up take to appear?

Online and app payments usually update your balance almost immediately. Kiosk and bank payments can take a few hours, so top up early if your balance is already low.

What happens if my Salik balance runs out?

Your crossings are still recorded. Salik generally gives a short grace period to recharge; if the balance is not restored in time, a fine can be issued for each crossing made without credit.

Can I recharge Salik using my plate number instead of the tag?

Yes, many channels let you identify the account with your plate details: the issuing emirate, the plate category or code and the plate number.

Is Odwyddw the official Salik website?

No. Odwyddw is an independent guide and is not affiliated with Salik Company PJSC or the RTA. For payments and account changes, always use the official Salik channels.

Can I get a refund of my remaining Salik balance?

Refunds or balance transfers are handled by Salik itself, typically when a vehicle is sold or an account is closed. Contact official Salik customer service with your account details to request one.
